Genre
The genre of our film is established at the start. the editing is fast paced making it convey to the action genre and is more exciting. The camera movement helps if its moving fast and and hand held is more panicky. In our film the hero point of view is shown with a hand held camera. Also genre is established through the mis-en-scene. The place is scened in a dark room and the hero is tied to a chair you can straight away tell its going to be an action . The make up on the main character with bruises and blood shows he has been beaten or fighting which conveys to the action genre. The sound also helps establish the genre in our action film as its got an leery beat to it and tempo changes the music goes with the action Genre.
Narrative Theory
The theory our film goes with is Barthes - enigma code. Where the narrative will establish enigmas or mysteries as it goes along. Essentially , the narrative functions to establish then solve these mysteries. Our film starts with the hero tied to a chair and you don't understand whats going on, then the villain slowly walks in and you understand its an interrogation and when the dialog starts you start to work out that the villain (interrogator) is trying to find a women. But at the end the mystery carrys on as someone is screaming but the screen goes black and you can't tell who it is that is screaming or whats happening.
Representation
An actor plays a character in a film through his appearance voice, gestures facial and body language the character is created through these signifiers as well as others such as camera shots and editing. Gender , age ethnicity class is represented in media through ideologies. The hero in our film is represented as weak as the camera looks down on him and he is tied up which shows he has a flaw but the villain is in power as he stands over the hero with a weapon he is represented badly . Both character ethnicity is white male also both are middle class as there clothing is dark coats and hero has stylish hair cut.
Audience Theory
In our film we decided to go with an active audience as it goes with the action genre and the codes and convention. where the film is tense and build up suspense throughout the film keeping the audience on the edge of their seat and involved with the film getting to know the characters . We went with the Theory uses and gratification as the the audience is an active audience In a film industry context, 'the audience' exists before the screening of a movie and, at that stage, forms a target for film marketing 'the audience' exists after the screening of a movie as having social and cultural uses for the material they have just seen. While accused of ignoring the need to make content analyses which may reveal a certain denial of agency among audiences, uses and gratifications theory at least allows that they are active rather than passive. We didn't use the hypodermic needle theory as the it attracts mass audience where information is passively received whereas we targeted the younger male and female thrill seeking audience.
