Film Analysis

Film Analysis - Bourne Ultimatum

Camera Angles

The opening of The Bourne Ultimatum its very panicky and tense as its tracking a man and its shaky as the camera is hand held. It has lots of cut ins to show what is happening in the scene to show what is going on. It also has close ups to show who the main character is. The camera zooms in and has extreme close ups when the hero is trying to take drugs. Also with tracking shots it makes its seem fast pace.

Sound

     Diagetic
Has police sirens in the background ,lots of traffic noise(horns) and news voice over shows the dilemma of what’s going on as if someone has broke the law. Also can here the sound of heavy breathing which shows he's running and panicking also has the noise of footsteps.

     Non - Diagetic
The opening has tense dramatic music which speeds up whilst the hero is running to add tension and slows down as a build up when the hero stops moving. The music keeps with the Tempo of the film. Also has a flashback vision sound so when the hero goes into a vision and out of a vision has a noise.

Editing

Has lots of cut-ins with the camera with lots of different angles and quickly changing the camera positions making it look fast pace. Quickly cuts in between each scene to make it seem fast pace. Also has long slow clips to make it seem slowed down. When the Hero is in the vision it is really blurry has streaks across and is unfocused which makes the audience not sure what is going on but you can tell that its a vision. The vision has a defused effect and it cuts in and out of it with a strange effect.

Mis-en-scene

The heroes costume shows him with a long black coat that is tattered and ripped and the hero has blood on his face shows the hero in a dilemma and with flaws. The Villains are Foreign which makes audience weary also they hare wearing big coats, show its a cold setting and have the common Russian hat also establishes their nationality. The setting is busy outside and has traffic, it’s in the city shows hustle and bustle. The vision is really bright but when he comes back to reality its dark and cold. Has a bright and dark contrast between the two styles. The lighting is from cars/traffic and city. The mood is panicky and very tense builds up suspension also pain when the hero is taking drugs. Has needle as prop to show drugs.

Film Analysis - Salt

Salt - Mis-En-Scene

At the start the Hero is being Interrogated. The mood is negative with dark room, scared atmosphere. The hero has blood make up and she is dirty, she has a bruised eye. Her clothes are white tattered. Shows she is stripped of dignity. White shows Pure. The natural light coming through. The Villains are foreign shows audience fear over invasion, they have army costumes and there are army vehicles. They use Rope and petrol with a tube to go with the torture scene to add with pain. The start scene is set in a dark prison cell.

Salt - Camera Angles

The camera shows use of close ups on the main character to get used to her and they get to know one person, also establishes Hero. The use of cut ins show the ordeal of the the Hero is going through. The Camera shows power between the Hero and Villains looking down on hero when she is being tortured to show she is defenseless and looking up and villain to show he is in power. The hand held camera is used in torture scene it represents, panicking and makes it tense, it contrasts with second half of film where the camera is smoothed. In second part of clip where she is walking with an American man it has tracking shot establishing scene and location outside and also establishes new character. Has bright natural light. Also showed a shot between the foreigners and Americans shows the conflict between them both.

Salt - Sound

     Diegetic :

You could here lots of diegetic environment surrounding noises , with the door slamming and clanking of metal enhanced the atmosphere scene
Also you could hear the gagging of the hero when she was being tortured with the funnel and petrol

     Non-Diegetic :

The music was dramatic and tense during the torture scene. The voice over was by the female main  character. helps establish main character .

Salt - Editing

The pace at the start was fast with lots of cuts to make it look panicky and scared in the torture scene. Also there was lots of cut ins and close ups to show what was going on and the expression the the heros face all fast pace cut ins with lots of handheld movement. The film contrasts from start being lots of cut ins make it look fast pace and scared in torture scene then slows down near the end of the scene.

Film Analysis – Casino Royale

Camera:

The opening sequences of Casino Royale uses wide shots to establish an eerie setting. There are lots of slick and fluid changes in camera angles, used to show the idea of a routine for the main character. The camera looks up at a man at the start of the film, showing he has power and high status. The fight scene contains lots of cut-ins to show aspects of the scene more vividly and make the audience’s view more detailed.

Sound:

The extract uses both diagetic and non-diagetic sounds in order to establish genre. For example, diagetic sounds such as characters’ footsteps as they walk, the mechanical noises made by the lift in the scene, and the whistling noise of the cold exterior are used. Non-diagetic sounds, i.e. sounds which have been purposely added to the film are also used, such as tense music at the start which is used to build up the scene.

Mis-En-Scene:

Black and white shots are used during the prologue before the story begins in order to make the scene seem more eerie, dark and cold. The black and white is then changed to colour when the fight scene begins. This emphasises the fight scene and makes it stand out in the opening stages of the film. The use of props, such as a gun helps to establish the genre as Action, as the majority of Action films contain weapons and violence, usually in the form of guns.

Editing:

The editing is regular and fluid in order to show routine and in some places urgency. The whitewash used during the fight scene contrasts greatly with the black and white used in the beginning of the scene.
